On 8 April 2016 Keith Johnson wrote an article in Foreign Policy on the recent privatisation of the Piraeus Port Authority. In his view, the recent deal gives new impetus to the ambition of Beijing to build a modern Silk Road connecting China, Central Asia and Europe. He also asserts that ‘Piraeus could again be a lifeline for Greece, helping attract billions in foreign investment andf turning a backwater into a global hub’. In addition, Keith Johnson argues that Beijing’s approach to deepening trade and broadening its geopolitical influence contrasts Washington’s approach to trade. However, he says that multilateral accords proposed by the the US to boost its role in Europe and Asia and counter China’s influence such a the Trans Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership face uncertain future.
