On 12 March 2018, the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung, the Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft and the Goethe Institut organised the international conference: ‘Security and stability in the Western Balkans’ in Athens. The event took place in the conference hall of Goethe Institute. Keynote speakers were: Prof. Ursula Männle (former Minister of State, Chairwoman of the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation) and Dr. Evangelos Venizelos (former deputy prime minister, former Minister for Foreign Affairs, MP, Professor at the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki).
In the context of this international conference a panel discussion on the new Silk Road in the Western Balkan region was organised. Speakers were Dr Jens Bastian (Southeast Europe Association), Dr George Tzogopoulos, Dr Luba von Hauff (Associate Fellow German Council on Foreign Policy, Berlin), and Dr Klaus Fiesinger (Regional Director for Southeast Europe of the Hanns-Seidel Foundation, Zagreb). The discussion was moderated by journalist of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Michael Martens. During the discussions experts exchanged views on how the EU and China might find a symbiosis model to cooperate in the Western Balkans.
