The railway line in Idomeni remains closed appriximately four weeks after its initial blockage by refugees disenchanted by the closure of FYROM’s borders. According to the Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini, a police operation which took place on Monday 18 April 2016, led to a temporary evacuation. However, the refugees returned to the track a few hours after the operation. Kathimerini writes that the closure of the line has imposed a significant financial burden on companies shipping their goods by train as they had to be re-routed via Bulgaria during the migrants’ protest. The demonstration also affected imports.
