With two films, the “Amerika Square” (2016) by Yannis Sakaridis – which is Greece’s nomination for 2018 foreign language Oscar awards – and “Suntun” (2016) by Argyris Papadimitropoulos, Greece is participating at the 10th anniversary edition of the EU Film Festival (EUFF), which is organised by the EU Delegation to China with the support of member states. The festival was launched on 16 October in Beijing (screenings from 14 to 31 October) and will visit to other Chineses cities as well (Chengdu 1-14 November, Shanghai 17-26 November, Jinan 29 November – 5 December, Shenzhen 8-17 December).
The significance of the institution, which aims to render European film production, as well as modern European culture and creative industries better known in China, was stressed at a press conference attended by EU Ambassador to China, Hans Dietmar Schweisgut and the directors of the honoured films which opened the Festival, “Easy” (2017) and “The Dissidents” (2016), Italian Andrea Magnani και Estonian Jaak Kilmi, repsectively. In addition, Ambassador Schweisgut thanked all member states that have supported this year’s Festival, noting that part of its success lies in the fact that all 28 member states were represented, providing thus a panorama of European cinematic production.
